Abstract

This paper examines a collection of documents related to the public school board for Arkona, Ontario for the period of the early 1880s, with a stress on letters of application by various teachers from across Ontario. An examination of these letters and the accompanying references in the local context of the changing economic and social underpinnings of sheds light on the hiring processes, as well as providing access into the lives of individual teachers during the 1880s.
